Fenyuan Hamlet

Geographical Position:

Fenyuan Hamlet, with an area of 1.52 square kilometers, is adjacent with the hamlets on the southwest to the administration office of Shekou. It locates in the center of the village. To the east of Fenyuan Hamlet, there are Qielao Hamlet and Jiaxing Hamlet; to the south and southwest it is adjacent with Jinfeng Hamlet; to the northwest there is Fenkeng Hamlet; and to the north it leads to the streets in Shekou. The hamlet, with an altitude of between 60 and 80 meters, is on the south bank of Mao Luo Keng which is on the east side of Ba Gua Tai. Waters in Mao Luo Keng and Xin Xin Keng flow into the branch of Mao Luo Stream on rain seasons from west to east, with Mao Luo Stream flowing in the east. Besides the vertical valleys on the east side of Ba Gua Tai that is on the west, there is also a large scale of orchards. On the east part that is close to Mao Luo Stream, there are paddy fields thanks to the convenient conditions for irrigation.

 

History of the Hamlet Name:

The name of Fenyuan comes from the tobacco (also called Fen or Xun in Minnan dialect) that has been planted in the place since Qing Dynasty. However, the tobacco that was planted then might not be the one that people are familiar with today but opium, that is also called opium poppy. Since during the period of Daoguang (1821-1850), there is no place called Fenyuan, the name of Fenyuan is very likely to be adopted after that period.

 

Traffic Arteries:

The main roads in the village that extend outwards are: Zhang Nan Road (also called Tai 14 th Ding Road which is to be widened to a road of 15 meters wide. And the lands on both sides of it have already been expropriated and construction will start on soon. And the part that is to be widened goes from the 5 th Fenyuan Bridge in Fenyuan Hamlet to the crossroad of Yuan Cao Road (1 st part) of Xitou Hamlet and Zhang Nan Road) that goes through the hamlet from the south to the north; other roads include Mei Hua Road (Zhang Nan Road to Tu Dou Liao), Nan Miao Street (going westwards along Zhong Xiao Road in Shekou Hamlet to Tian De Gong via Mao Xing Bridge), and Nan Fang Liao Nong Road that passes the northwest part of the village and the north of Mao Luo Keng.
